Just an hour's drive from Gdańsk lies a place that has permanently marked history – the Stutthof concentration camp, the first of its kind on Polish soil. Established in 1939 by the Germans, initially as a forced labor camp, it gradually transformed into an extermination camp. Here, thousands of people were imprisoned, tortured, and murdered, including representatives of the Polish elite, intellectual circles, and socially active residents of Pomerania. It is estimated that around 85,000 lives were lost here.
Today, the site of the former camp is a vast museum covering 20 hectares. It is a space where the weight of history can still be felt. While touring the barracks, gas chamber, crematorium, and the monumental Monument of Struggle and Freedom – participants experience a lesson that cannot be forgotten. This place is not easy, but it is necessary. It allows us to understand the past, remember it, and ensure that it never happens again.
